How to Paint Rain Drops

My gift to you this Holiday Season is a video demo on how to paint rain drops (or Hawaiian snow) on a red hibiscus using watercolors.

This technique can be used on just about any flower. First, finish painting the flower including any shading and highlights. Second, make sure it is dry. Next, start the rain drop technique I demonstrate in the video to create lovely, three dimensional rain drops.

Aloha and Mahalo!

Kauai's Orchid and Art Festival 2010

This past weekend I was honored to be teaching "Painting Kauai's Exotic Orchids" at the Hanapepe Orchid and Art Festival. This is a photo from Friday's class that took place at Amy Lauren's Gallery.

This artist said that she normally does oil painting and that this is her FIRST watercolor. I think she did a beautiful job on this one!

Another gorgeous start to a beautiful orchid painting!
A lovely orchid painted by a young lady who just turned 13 years old! Happy Birthday!
Now this was the most unique and imaginative painting! This eight year old student painted the top painting, and then she decided she wanted to put her orchid in a pot. So she drew out and did the bottom painting to connect the two all from her own imagination!

Here's where the class was held.

After the class I took a walk around to see the "Orchid Show".

Then I took a stroll around Hanapepe Town to visit the art galleries there.

They even had a classic car show.

Here's the painting I worked on during my second class on Saturday.

Another beautiful piece by one of my students.

Here's a glimpse of Hanapepe and the famous Banana Patch Studio.

I hope you've enjoyed this pictorial about our little orchid festival!

New Sumi-e Style ACEOs

I love to dabble in this beautiful art form by creating these precious, minature original paintings from time-to-time. Each one measures just 3.5"x2.5" and are sometimes referred to as Artist Trading Cards or ACEOs. ACEO stands for art cards, editions and originals. They are like sports trading cards for artists and are a very popular item being sold and collected over the internet. The only requirement for creating one is that it should measure 2.5" x 3.5" (the standard size of a sports trading card). The medium used to create one is limitless - watercolor, acrylic, pencil, photography, oils, just to name a few.

These original watercolors can be purchased for only $15 each at my Etsy Gallery: http://www.kauaiartist.etsy.com .

Aloha and Have a Wonderful Day,
Marionette

Online Art Classes

"How to Paint the Mountains"

Several of my Facebook Friends suggested that I try to teach an online art class especially for those who can't travel to Kauai. So, I thought, "Why not?" After much thought, I invited those interested into a closed group on Facebook just for the class. Now through text, photos, and video, I am able to bring my classes to my far away students and the feedback has been positive.

My first class was "Landscapes of Kauai in Watercolor "where I provided a photo of the famous Polihale Beach of Kauai for everyone to print and use as a reference for the class. Next, I put together a detailed supply list with links to Blick Art Materials website for easy ordering and also for a photo and description of the exact supply needed for the class.

Lessons took place through step-by-step photos and videos of myself painting the project. I then posted them to the group page. This way everyone could work at their own pace when they had the time. I also encouraged the students to post photos of their progress so that I could give them some feedback. Private feedback was also given through emails.

I am currently planning to continue my landscape class, plus add a Tropical Flowers of Kauai Watercolor class, a Plantation Cottages of Kauai Watercolor class, and a Beginning Sumi-e Class.

If you are interested in taking one of my upcoming online art classes, please email me. You need to have a Facebook account to participate. The class fee is a voluntary donation of $10 per class.

Friday's Watercolor Class

Here's my "favorite" student of all! He is 93 years old, lives on Kauai part-time and comes to my classes once or twice a week when he is on island. Such a wonderful man with a very big heart! He has created several masterpieces since painting with me and is having many of them framed for his home. (I certainly hope to still be painting at 93!)
This young lady is showing us one of her latest watercolors (the heliconia) and also her first acrylic painting (the hibiscus) that she painted in a previous class. She is also one of my art class "regulars" and lives on Kauai full-time.

These two ladies dropped in for their first watercolor lesson last week after taking my silk painting class. One lives here full-time and the other in California (but frequently visits Kauai). Both are very artistic, and I really enjoyed "talking story" with them about art, Etsy, blogs, fabric art and more!!!
I am always amazed at what my students create in a single watercolor class! Mahalo to these very talented students and extremely nice people!
Aloha,
Marionette

Painting Kauai's Exotic Orchids in Watercolor

Mahalo to everyone who participated in or helped organize my workshop at Kauai's Orchid and Art Festival in Hanapepe on Saturday! I was so amazed by the talent and style of these art students that I wanted to share their creations in progress:

Several of these budding artists said they have never tried or had much luck at watercolor before! Every single student painted a winner!
A Big Mahalo to Schar and Crystal for helping me during the workshop! We had so much fun listening to the live music of Cindy Combs and Makana. What a blast! Great orchids, art, music, people, food, and the list goes on. If you are on Kauai next year at the end of March, don't miss this event!
