Sumi-e Kauai Rooster Painting Demo

In this video I am demonstrating a modern Sumi-e style painting technique using Winsor and Newton watercolors on Arches watercolor paper, 140 lb. cold pressed. My goal here is to simplify the design of the rooster using a single brush with no preliminary drawing.

Sumi-e is a very simple and expressionistic painting technique where the artist tries to capture the essence of the subject in just a few strokes (more or less). I often refer to it as the "yoga" of painting since the artist needs to be in a place where mind, body, and spirit can come together to produce a simple, spontaneous piece of art.

In traditional Sumi-e one normally paints with ink often ground using an ink stick and stone. The ink is usually made from pine soot held together with a resin. A bamboo brush made from natural animal hair is then used to paint calligraphy-like strokes on rice paper.

I hope you enjoy this demo and will try your hand at a Sumi-e rooster or come up with your own unique composition!

New Sumi-e Style ACEOs

I love to dabble in this beautiful art form by creating these precious, minature original paintings from time-to-time. Each one measures just 3.5"x2.5" and are sometimes referred to as Artist Trading Cards or ACEOs. ACEO stands for art cards, editions and originals. They are like sports trading cards for artists and are a very popular item being sold and collected over the internet. The only requirement for creating one is that it should measure 2.5" x 3.5" (the standard size of a sports trading card). The medium used to create one is limitless - watercolor, acrylic, pencil, photography, oils, just to name a few.

These original watercolors can be purchased for only $15 each at my Etsy Gallery: http://www.kauaiartist.etsy.com .

My Kauai Vacation

Sorry for the long absence from my blog. I've been on vacation with my family visiting from the Mainland for over a week! This was their first time to Kauai, and I was so excited to be able to show them around my beautiful island of Kauai! Above is a photo of a native, Hawaiian hibiscus.

My niece is "digging to China" at Hanalei Bay.

Here's my sister looking at a banana tree for the first time.

We were so lucky to see a Hawaiian monk seal sunbathing at Salt Pond Beach Park. Later on he went for a swim with the keikis in the kiddie pond!

Here I am with my niece at my art studio, Painting Paradise.

My sister is painting a Kauai Rooster. I think it's a law that if you are an artist and live on Kauai, you have to paint at least one rooster or chicken!!! (NOT!) LOL

The two serious artists at work. My niece loves arts and crafts and often spends two to three hours a day creating! It's in the blood!

My niece asked me if she could, "paint the manikin." I thought she was going to pose him, and paint her rendition of him on watercolor paper. Instead she literally PAINTED THE MANIKIN!!! How cute!

Here's the whole gang at the Plantation Gardens restaurant at the Kiahuna Plantation Resort. From left to right, my brother-in-law, my niece, me, my sister, and my hubby!

She's a "coconut girl in a high fashion world!"

Having fun with the boogie board at Salt Pond.

Kickin' back and relaxin' under a coconut tree!

Shoveling sand at the Kiahuna Plantation Beach.

Looks like Kauai Coffee has a new coffee picker! I'll have to sign my niece up for the next harvest season in Septemer!! LOL

It certainly was a lot of fun spending time with my ohana! They thoroughly enjoyed Kauai. Mahalo for visiting!!!!
