Our monthly Art & Wine event returns to Shutters Lounge featuring the wines of Napa Valley. Kauai-based artist Marionette Taboniar will be on-site this evening for a live demonstration and mini-exhibition of her popular watercolor, pastel, acrylic and silk paintings.

Plein Air Day at Botanical Gardens in Poipu Oct. 16, 2010

Please join me for my "Modern Sumi-e" class on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 11am-2pm at the beautiful botanical gardens in Poipu. Helen Turner will also be teaching her pastel plein air class. Marlene Czajkowski will be demonstrating her amazing sculpting skills, and Kelly Bandalos and Elizabeth Ferris will be demonstrating plein air painting around the gardens.

Plein Air Painting with Schar

Last week I asked Schar if she wanted to do some plein air painting (painting outdoors from life) at Salt Pond Beach. She said sure, but she needed to be pau (Hawaiian for done) by 11:00 a.m., so we decided to meet at 7 a.m. which is a wonderful time to be at any Hawaiian beach. The sun has risen, it's still cool, and not too many people on the beach yet.

This is the scene I decided to paint.

This is Schar's toolbox filled with lots of wonderful oil pastels, brushes, and even walnut oil for blending her beautiful colors with.

Schar is progressing very nicely on this one. She even demonstrated her technique for making waves in oil pastels. Mahalo!

Plein Air Painting Day

Yesterday I was invited to paint with the Plein Air Painters of Hawaii during their special Kauai event! I had a pretty packed day planned already (teaching art classes), but I got up early and headed out to their first location, the Waimea Plantation Cottages. Somehow I managed to carve out two hours during the morning to set up and create a plein air pastel painting of this lovely cottage:

Here are some of the materials I used - Rembrandt pastels, charcoal pencils, and of course some "Aloha Passion Orange Juice" to keep me going!
