My hand painted silk scarves are now available through my Etsy Gallery https://www.etsy.com/shop/kauaiartist . Each one of a kind silk creation measures approximately 30"x30" and is painted in my Kauai, Hawaii studio on an 8mm Habotai scarf, which is also known as "China Silk". It is very lightweight and breezy and fun to wear.  I paint using Dye-Na-Flow silk fabric paints, and the design outline is painted with an acrylic fabric paint.  The background has a fun pattern created by adding Hawaiian sea salt to the paint as it dries.

Caring for your new scarf: Just wash your scarf in the sink with a little Woolite or similar, rinse in cold water, hang to dry, and iron on the back side using the silk setting on your iron.

Kauai Silk Painting Class with Marionette

Silk Painting is one of the most fun mediums I have ever tried.  It is similar to watercolors, but the paint flows even more freely on the suspended silk. Here is one of my hibiscus silk paintings still suspended on the stretcher bars:

 

In this photo, one of my students has outlined her design with an acrylic fabric paint.  We outline the main design so that when we paint it, the paint stays within the wall of the outlining paint.  Otherwise, it would just run free all over the place.

 

This photo shows how one of my students painted the inside of the outlined area to make a beautiful Kauai sunrise shell.

 

Next, we paint in the background, being sure to keep the entire background wet.  Then we sprinkle on a little Hawaiian sea salt to make some spontaneous designs in the background.

Here is one of my students with her beautiful creation.  See how the salt does it's thing in the background?

I recently taught a few silk painting classes and was really impressed with what my students painted. Silk Painting Techniques

A Silk Painting Tutorial from my August 2009 Newsletter

Silk Painting is definitely one of my favorite classes to teach. It's really easy to do once you know a little about the necessary materials and techniques. It's also a lot of fun!

First, the silk fabric (8mm Habotai China silk scarves with hemmed edges) needs to be stretched on a frame before painting. I use heavy duty stretcher bars that are a little larger than the silk I am stretching and attach the silk with push pins. There are a variety of stretching techniques out there, so you'll just need to find one that works for you.

Once the fabric is taut (like a drum) then slip your design underneath the fabric on top of some magazines so that it is resting against the silk fabric. Using a vanishing fabric marker (often used in quilting), trace your design directly onto the silk.

Next, comes the application of the resist. The resist is essential to "fence in" your design so that the paint doesn't flow outside. It is often referred to as the "Serti Technique" in many silk painting books. There are many resists out there for silk painting, but I prefer to use a thick fabric paint made by Scribbles. The paint is applied directly using a small tip to achieve nice lines. Dry thoroughly with a hair drier before proceeding.

The silk paints I use are made by Dye-Na-Flow and they are wonderful! They are heat set by using an iron once the painting is complete (with silk dyes one has to steam set the paint). I use old watercolor or sumi-e brushes to apply the paint and blend and layer much like watercolor painting.

Once the paint is dry in my main design, I then wet the entire background with water and apply the paint (two or three colors) in an abstract way creating designs, patterns and drips. Next, I use my "secret weapon" to create even more interesting designs - Hawaiian salt. Although, any coarse salt will do including kosher or rock salt. Next, just kick back, relax with a cup of coffee, and wait for the background to dry naturally so the salt has a chance to work it's magic! The salt makes really wonderful designs by attracting or pulling the pigment in the paint across the wet silk.

Next, dry your creation and remove it from the frame. Brush off any extra salt, rinse it in cold water and let the painting dry. To set the paint, just iron on the back with a medium heat iron.

A VAST Encounter with Silk Painting

Belonging to VAST, an online art group through Etsy, has brought me several blessings. I met my good friends Schar and Dava (who both live on Kauai), and now I have had the pleasure of meeting in person Melanie , a wonderful lady and artist! She and her husband came to Kauai on vacation last week, and one of the activities that she made time for was my Silk Painting class! We had a great time talking story about art, Kauai, and life in general. Here's a peek into the class:

I teach the French Serti Technique and this is what Melanie is doing to create her lovely plumeria design. From Dharma Trading Co: "The Serti (closing or fence) technique is the silk painting technique where designs are formed with gutta or water-based resists, which are applied to white silk that has been pre-washed, dried and stretched (on a stretcher). Once the gutta or water-based resist has dried, it acts as a barrier for the dye or paint—keeping the color within the outlined areas of the design and allowing you to achieve sharply defined borders. (Without this barrier, the dye or paint would flow into more of an abstract, undefined pattern.) After the dye or paint has been properly set, the clear gutta or resist is removed and a defining line the color of the original fabric remains. Colored guttas and resists are also available that are meant to remain in the fabric."
I decided to paint a silk scarf with Koi fish. You can see my underdrawing (the purple pen) where I made some changes while applying my resist.

Here Melanie is applying her silk paints beautifully to the plumeria design.

Here Melanie is using my "secret weapon" to make the designs in the background of the scarf. Can you guess what it is?

The background is still wet, but it is almost complete!

Melanie's plumeria scarf is gorgeous as it dries on the frame!
