2020 - A New Year and a New Decade Full of Artistic Possibilites

It's January 3, 2020 and I'm sitting here in my Kauai art studio thinking of the possibilities for my art and studio for the upcoming year and decade.  Just looking around, I see that my studio could sure use some clean up and reorganizing.  I guess after 13 years in the same art studio, one sure does collect a lot of art supplies and junk.  But, hey, you never know if that junk will turn into a piece of art, right?  So bit by bit, I will work on getting things spruced up and organized.

"Go bigger and better" is another goal of mine with my art.  I am finally at the stage in my art career where I need to focus more on my painting quality.  I have quite a few ideas lined up and can't wait to find a little more studio time to make things happen.  I just finished this one at the tail end of 2019:
Orchid Tree Flower Original Watercolor
Joe surprised me for Christmas with my first DSLR camera (digital single lens reflex), and I am excited to learn how to use it and experiment with some better photography.  Up until now I was just using a "point and shoot" camera to take all of my reference photos for my paintings.  I already took out about five books from the library on the subject to learn how to use it in manual mode instead of auto mode.  I even purchased a few filters for my lenses.  Plus, my good friend, Georgia, gave me a really nice, heavy duty tripod. (I wonder if she knew about Joe's surprise in advance?)  We hope to take it to the beach and get some good shots of the whales this whale season.

Plus, that new camera may play an important role in another goal of mine to produce some high quality art videos.  I finally have the equipment to make some nice art demo videos, so all I need now is some quiet time in the studio.  Who knows?  I may even get back into doing online classes again.

Another goal of mine is to continue to add more images and products to my "print on demand" sites.  My clients sure love to add a Hawaiian or tropical flair to their home decor using my images.  Here are some new images and products that have been recently added:

 Cutting Board

 Pillow Shams

Tote Bag

All of the above are available at

 Notebook

 Framed Print

Tapestry

All of the above are available at:

Whew!   I am already getting tired just thinking about all of these wonderful projects for the upcoming year and decade.  Plus, I will be continuing to teach art classes at my studio, so if you are on Kauai this year, please stop in and say, "Aloha"!

Kauai Silk Painting Class with Marionette

Silk Painting is one of the most fun mediums I have ever tried.  It is similar to watercolors, but the paint flows even more freely on the suspended silk. Here is one of my hibiscus silk paintings still suspended on the stretcher bars:
In this photo, one of my students has outlined her design with an acrylic fabric paint.  We outline the main design so that when we paint it, the paint stays within the wall of the outlining paint.  Otherwise, it would just run free all over the place.

This photo shows how one of my students painted the inside of the outlined area to make a beautiful Kauai sunrise shell.
Next, we paint in the background, being sure to keep the entire background wet.  Then we sprinkle on a little Hawaiian sea salt to make some spontaneous designs in the background.

Here is one of my students with her beautiful creation.  See how the salt does it's thing in the background?

Hawaiian Fish Zentangle

Every now and then I like to kick back and relax with the very meditative drawing technique, Zentangle. All you need is some paper, a micron pen, and an eraser. And, of course, a lot of designs (or as they call them, tangles).   I hope you will enjoy my latest creation:

Artist Demo - Painting the Mona Lisa with Alcohol Inks

Looks messy, right?  But the outcome is fun.  First I start with a little alcohol ink on a blank piece of Yupo paper.  Then, I try to wipe it away with alcohol and a tissue to create a very light colored but semi-textured image.  Next, I draw in my design (the Mona Lisa) and mask off the light areas with masking fluid.  This is when the fun starts!!  With the light colors being preserved, I am free to drip, drop, scrape, and manipulate the alcohol inks around the painting.  I often use a q-tip with alcohol on it to soften areas, and I use some alcohol ink pens to draw with.  But, the most fun part is putting some alcohol on a tooth brush and flicking it so that the droplets interact with the alcohol inks to make interesting designs.  The next step is to, of course, remove the masking fluid and fix up any areas that need a little work.

The original painting can be found at my Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/listing/232055401/alcohol-inks-on-yupo-painting-abstract?ref=shop_home_active_10 and my other alcohol inks on Yupo paintings can be found here https://www.etsy.com/shop/kauaiartist?section_id=15832235&ref=shopsection_leftnav_6 .

If you are on Kauai, you can also join me for a class in Alcohol Inks on Yupo paper.  Here is my art class schedule http://www.kauaiartclasses.blogspot.com/ .  I also teach it as a private lesson.  Feel free to contact me at 808-631-9173 if you are interested.  I hope you have enjoyed this demo!
