About the Art
Kauai-based artist Marionette
Taboniar will be on-site this evening with a mini-exhibition that includes her new collection of reverse
acrylic paintings on plexiglass, featuring beautiful underwater scenes! "Reverse"
acrylic means it has to be painted in a reverse method from the normal way of
painting. In other words, the details have to be painted first with the
background added last. Marionette is currently painting underwater scenes
of turtles and fish using this method and adds a touch of "gold"
paint which gives the piece a sparkle when held in the light at the right
angle.
Marionette fell in love with Kauai in 1992 and has been painting "Hawaiian Style" ever since. Her works include the techniques of acrylics, encaustics, silk painting, watercolors, and pastels and can be found in public and private collections around the world. Her latest commercial commission was "Tropical Bamboo II" a 22"x30" watercolor for Design Studio of Honolulu this summer. She has also created numerous designs for Kauai Coffee Company.
For over five years Marionette has been operating her studio, Painting Paradise, in Waimea where she teaches a variety of classes. In her spare time she enjoys fishing and going to the beach with her husband, Joe. For more information about Marionette and her art, please visit www.kauai-artist.net.

About the Wine Tasting
Our topic for the
evening is "Wines
from France, Spain, and California”. Here are our featured wines:
France:
Les Hospices 2010 Sancerre Blanc
Sancerre
is one of the oldest terroirs in France, dating back to the 6th
century. The status of AOC was awarded to white Sancerre wines in 1936
and the terroir stretches over 6000 acres. The terroir and the vines are
on the banks of the Loire Valley, East of Bourges, in the heart of France.
Les Hospices, with its quality/price ratio, is one of the benchmarks of
Sancerre!
White-yellow
with silver reflections. Lively and full of fruit, with pleasant mineral.
Floral notes of white flowers (acacia &
eglantine) and citrus fruit aromas, backed up by blackcurrant buds
and wild flowers. Pairs as an aperitif, with assorted raw
vegetables, light dishes such as salads, quiche, fish (salmon) and with poultry, white meats,
Asian food, and goat cheese. Serve chilled.
Spain:
Evohé 2011 Garnacha Vinas Viejas
It
is here in the south eastern parts of Aragon
that the Garnacha Grapes initially came from Sardinia
and where it has most fully adapted to. The grape is known as Cannonau in
Sardinia, where it is claimed that it originated there and spread to other
Mediterranean lands under Aragon
rule.
Our
Evohé Garnacha which sees no oak, is pure Garnacha from start to finish.
The color is a beautiful black cherry hue with a magenta rim; the bouquet
is bright, ripe and vivacious with notes of blackberries, blueberries and black
plums, lavender and licorice with sleek slate-like minerals. In the
mouth, much is the same, with these luscious black and blue fruit flavors
taking on wild touches of mulberry, briers and violets, set into moderately
dense and finely-milled tannins allied to lively acidity. This is Garnacha at its best.
California ~ Mendocino
Patianna 2009 Chardonnay (Organic)
Patianna
Organic Vineyards includes 126 acres tucked alongside the Russian
River in the Sanel
Valley, Mendocino County.
Our Chardonnay vines thrive in sandy, gravelly soils. We whole
cluster pressed and fermented the Chardonnay in stainless steel tanks, where
the wine remained for nine months sur lie. A light touch of
medium-toasted French oak enhanced the bright luscious fruit. The wine shows
attractive, fruit-forward floral and white peach aromas with hints of tropical
fruit.
An
excellent value Chardonnay that should cost more. Patianna’s
certified organic estate vineyards produce a rich wine with a ton of flavor and
acidity. Sur lie aging and a bit of oak create a round lush mouth-feel
without adding a stick of butter. Crisp flavors of apple, pear, peach,
tropical fruit and vanilla.
California ~ Napa
Rutherford Vintners Napa Valley 2009 Chardonnay
“This
light straw-colored wine has aromas of pear, butterscotch, and vanilla.
Flavors include apple and melon. The finish is soft and lingering.
This wine can be sipped by itself or paired with a number of foods.
For appetizers it pairs well with Brie and Munster cheeses. For the main course
one might try pork tenderloin, grilled scallops or baked chicken.” -
Larry Rocha, Winemaker
Rutherford Vintners Napa Valley 2009 Merlot
“This wine has a dark garnet color.
Aromas include cherry, blackberry and spice with flavors of plum and
berry. Tannins and fruit marry well for a soft finish. This is a graceful wine.
It can be sipped by itself, but is excellent with appetizers or main
courses. An appetizer such as Brie and smoked salmon come to mind. For
the main course, rack of lamb, a grilled steak or roast duck are favorites to
pair with this wine.” - Larry Rocha, Winemaker
